Rare chart of San Francisco Bay. The map appears in the atlas to Du Petit Thouars' Voyage Autour du Monde..., and was also sold separately - the present example, uncreased and on thick paper, with "Prix Un Franc" in lower right margin, seems to be one of the separate issues. Neal Harlow notes that Du Petit-Thouars, "while making investigations in the Pacific on behalf of French trading interests, dropped anchor in Monterey harbor on October 18, 1837, and remained their with the frigate Venus until November 14... [He] sent a party to San Francisco Bay to obtain water and make observations. They remained there from October 26 to November 1, preparing a chart of the approaches to the bay..."
