A paper label on the back of this circa 1890 canvas identifies the location as "Housatonic River Conn." The scene features cows in the foreground, a man and boy heading toward them from a red-roofed house, and a large sand dune in the background. In the lower right corner, the artist signed "G. Sandorff." Sandorff is known in Europe for his paintings of mountainous countryside. In research, I did not definitively find his nationality, but he may be German, since most of his scenes were of Germany. I did find that he also painted views of Pennsylvania, and now we see that he chose to paint Connecticut. The Housatonic river area may have once had large dunes like the one shown, but I have not found references of them. However, there are smaller dunes there today, and the mouth of the Housatonic is undergoing restoration, with the addition of man-made dunes to stop erosion. So, either this painting is a historical document of what once was a magnificent dune, or the artist decided to make the dune huge because he was homesick for the Alps. I'm leaning toward the latter interpretation, since the boy and man seem to have German clothing, and the red-roofed house would be typical of an alpine home. Either way, G. Sandorff was a master oil painter, and this view is an excellent example of his skill! It invites us to enter a bucolic moment when the world was slower, and tranquil. The canvas has been lined onto birch plywood to stabilize it, gently cleaned, and coated with an archival non-yellowing varnish to protect it. It is installed in a new gold-metal leafed frame.
